This is probably the most exciting tech battle of our days: Google versus Microsoft. Although it will probably go on for years, it will remain a very hot subject. It all started a few months ago when each company launched a direct attack on its rival’s most important business.
Google started by announcing the development of a new desktop operating system, Chrome OS. Microsoft swiftly responded by launching a new search engine, Bing. Score is 1-1! Chrome OS is Google’s first attempt to disrupt one of Microsoft’s most important business segments. Until it reaches the market, nobody can say if it will be a success or a failure. Until now, we only know that the operating system promises to be fast, simple, and free to gadget makers.
On the other side, Microsoft’s search engine, Bing, achieved only a modest success until now. Microsoft’s part of the U.S. search market was 8.4% in June. Search generates over 90% of Google’s revenue. If Microsoft manages to steal a large part of the market, Google would be in big trouble. The same goes for Microsoft. If Google’s Chrome OS manages to be a success, the Windows juggernaut is in trouble.
These are just two fronts in the war between Google and Microsoft and both sides are far from victory at this point!
