Bad news for Facebook this week, as a new lawsuit was filed against them. This Monday, a group of five Facebook users filed a civil lawsuit, in which the company was accused of violating California consumer privacy laws. This was happening on Monday, at the California’s Orange County Superior Court.
The five plaintiffs, a professional photographer, two 13-year-old children, and actress and model, and a user of the original Facebook, are asking for a jury trial and for damages and attorney’s fees. Facebook is being accused of releasing private user information to third parties for commercial purposes. The accusations take the form of a 40-page complaint.
The complaints states, “”plaintiffs and the general public desire and expect a level of privacy, which Facebook has failed to satisfy under its current policies, procedures, practices, and technology,” Although Facebook spokesmen did not comment on the lawsuit, one of them stated “We see no merit to this suit and we plan to fight it.”
After a few investigations in Facebook’s history, we found out that they have been involved in privacy controversy. In July, and investigation by Canada’s privacy commissioner, Jennifer Stoddart, found that although it is relatively simple for a Facebook user to deactivate his or her account, the account is not deleted. This means that Facebook will still hold the user’s personal information for an indefinite period of time. This is, in fact, a violation of Canadian privacy laws.
We will keep you informed with any news regarding the trial as soon as we obtain them.
