BBC iPlayer will have a rival with software behemoth Microsoft launching an online video player named MSN Video Player, a video-on-demand service that enables U.K. consumers to watch TV anytime, anywhere at no extra charge. it will directly rival the iPlayer.
The MSN Player which goes live on Saturday will feature thousands of hours of programming allowing users to enjoy full series of their favorite shows. Unlike, BBC iPlayer it will not be totally ad-free like iPlayer, 30 second commercials will be aired before, during and after each show.
A Microsoft spokeswoman said there are currently no plans to roll out the service in other regions.
Microsoft’s new service comes as Project Canvas, a service that would bring Internet content and new video-on-demand options to TV, is also set to launch in the U.K. later this year.
Project Canvas, a venture between the BBC and ITV PLC (ITV.LN), BT Group PLC (BT), RTL Group SA’s (RTL.BT) Five, Channel 4 and Carphone Warehouse PLC (CPW.LN), comes as commercial broadcasters are exploring ways to distribute their programs to boost advertising.
