Yesterday, Orange and Intel announced their strategic partnership to develop Orange multimedia services for Intel’s MeeGo platform. MeeGo is a joint venture between Nokia and Intel where both companies decided to develop a new hybrid mobile platform based on Nokia’s Maemo platform and Intel’s Mobilin platform.
The announcement from Orange gives a great boost to the future prospects of Maemo as an alternative platform in a market which is currently being closely contested by Android, iPhone OS and Symbian. As part of its collaboration with Intel, Orange will offer services such as Orange TV and Orange Maps on the MeeGo platform.
There’s no official word yet on the cell phone manufacturer chosen to launch the Orange MeeGo devices but I would be surprised if it’s anyone else apart from Nokia and/or LG. LG was among the few vendors to openly support the MeeGo platform and announce that it would roll out handsets supporting the MeeGo platform.
These are ominous signs that open source will be the future of software industry and mobile software is no exception to that rule.
