Skype is no longer a beta app for Nokia Symbian OS. Yesterday, the free Skype service for Nokia Symbian phones was moved to the Nokia Ovi Store. It is also available for download through the Skype website.
The timing of this announcement is very interesting to say the least. Yesterday, Skype had made a huge announcement to shelve its application for Windows and Java based mobile phones due to concerns over ‘quality standards’.
The Skype app lets you make free Skype-to-Skype calls, share files and send/receive Instant Messages on Wi-Fi or data connections. The Skype Symbian app will run on all Nokia smartphones using Symbian^1 – the latest Symbian version. Earlier this month, Skype had announced a deal with Verizon to provide its service on select Android and Blackberry phones and now the company says that it has plans to launch the app for Sony Ericsson pretty soon. Pretty aggressive growth plans – I’d say.
Skype has been reassuring carriers that Skype on mobile phones is a win-win deal for both parties as it entices subscribers to opt for higher priced ‘unlimited’ data plans.
Happy Skyping on your Nokia phone!
