Apple’s iPhone may be hitting the headlines for right or wrong reasons and getting more than adequate attention, but, that does not guarantee better market share, likewise, the erstwhile Finnish mobile czar Nokia may be not making as much noise (barring few digs at Apple) as it use to,nevertheless, that hasnt stopped it from retaining a substantial lead in the worldwide smart phone market achieving a 38% market share according to a survey carried out by Canalys .
The most impressive growth was registered by Android device shipments across a range of handset manufacturers ( HTC, Dell, Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and LG) , sales of devices running Google’s Android operating system grew 886% .
Apple of course remains a key player with a worldwide market share of 13%, the initial shipments of the iPhone 4 were predictably strong and contributed 61% to Apple’s growth despite of the ‘Antennagate’ fiasco. Shipments of RIM’s BlackBerry smart phones grew by 41% thanks to strong performances of devices such as the Curve 8520, it was the second placed vendor with an 18% market share
