Facebook has announced Places yesterday, the much expected feature that brings location based functionality to the popular social network site. Location-based services are the next big thing at this moment with Foursquare and Gowalla leading the pack. This service will be initially available on the latest version of the Facebook App for iPhone .
Facebook places will let users check-in at locations and share it on the Facebook update time-line. This new Facebook service draws a lot of features from the already existing location based services like Foursquare, Gowalla and Yelp. Places will also let you tag friends that are located near you. Currently, You’ll need to live in the U.S. to get this feature, UK launch dates haven’t been released yet.
Facebook is opening up certain aspects which will allow developers to access specific parts of Places, ofcourse, that means that we will see bunches of Facebook apps, that will start pulling information from Places, scraping it for data about people, locations, groups and give us some useworthy apps.
