Launch of Facebook Places in US has all the features of a Facebook feature launch – huge publicity in media, indepth discussions on blogosphere, scrutiny by privacy advocates and of course, large number of users trying it out. One unexpected but, positive consequence is that Foursquare is experiencing record interest in the wake of the launch of Facebook Places. On Thursday, the location service broke its record for new user signups.
“Just heard from The @HarryH that today was @foursquare’s biggest day ever in terms of new user signups,” Foursquare co-founder Dennis Crowley tweeted this afternoon. Facebook’s Places API is currently serving as a platform for services like Foursquare, and thanks to their 500 million users, Facebook is introducing the concept of location to millions of new users.
