Apple recent  Mac update for OS X Lion and Mountain Lion released this week removes its Java plugin from all OS X browsers.

Apple’s  support page provides more details :

“This release updates the Apple-provided system Java SE 6 to version 1.6.0_37 and is for OS X versions 10.7 or later.

This update uninstalls the Apple-provided Java applet plug-in from all web browsers. To use applets on a web page, click on the region labeled “Missing plug-in” to go download the latest version of the Java applet plug-in from Oracle.

This update also removes the Java Preferences application, which is no longer required to configure applet settings.”

This link directs you to the Java 7 plugin from Oracle, which has severe performance issues.

This is a big fail for Apple; I’m currently contracting at one of the world’s largest investment banks, where the remote access tool used by thousands of employees requires the Java web plugin.

The switch to Mountain Lion (which had no Java web plugin by default) caused a massive anti-Apple backlash as users struggled to find out why the company applet no longer worked.

This latest stunt is an extra slap in the face as, even when they do manage to get hold of a download, Oracle’s Java 7 plugin burns 100% of 2 CPU cores while it’s running and causes the fan to kick in after a few seconds.
