Microsoft Surface Pro 64GB model will have 41GB of installed assets, leaving users only 23GB of disk space, that certainly will not make the users happy when the device reaches the retail stores on February 9th. Mobile devices have always had less usable space than their advertised storage capacities because of pre-installed software.
Microsoft does warn users of the issue on the Surface webpage, saying that, “System software uses significant storage space. Available storage is subject to change based on system software updates and apps usage.”
A Microsoft spokesperson has told The Verge that the 64GB edition of Surface Pro will have 23GB of free storage out of the box. The 128GB model will have 83GB of free storage. It appears that the Windows 8 install, built-in apps, and a recovery partition will make up the 41GB total on the base Surface Pro model.
