World’s largest phone maker Samsung announced on Monday that it would stop making desktop PCs because of abysmal demand and fast shrinking profits and instead focus on tablets and laptops. “Demand for conventional desktop PCs is going down,” a Samsung official told The Korea Times. “We will allocate our resources to popular connected and portable devices.”
PC market would probably shrink this year according to Garner, which estimates that worldwide shipment will fall 10.6 percent from last year’s 305 million PCs.
Gartner believes that consumers would swing towards the “ultramobiles” like the Chromebook and other thin and lightweight notebooks.
“Tablets, all-in-one and hybrid PCs are Samsung’s current focus. Samsung is speeding up its restructuring of its PC business via product realignment toward profitable variants,” said another Samsung official.
