Android Gingerbread 2.3 operating system simply refuses to fade away even though it’s a two year old mobile software primarily as the low cost devices with frugal hardware could only support that. Not surprisingly, its found on 33% of Android devices as per Android Developers Page.
Android Jelly Bean leads with a 40% share of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich still has 22.5% share and Gingerbread follows with 33.1%.
Google recently introduced Android 4.3, which wasn’t a huge upgrade over Android 4.2. New iterations certainly aren’t going to help close the fragmentation gap. Fragmentation is a key challenge for developers as they have to strive to keep their apps backward compatible while making them work with the current Android mobile OS.
