Are you enjoying high speed downloads on normal sites and then when it comes to downloading torrents you’re getting really slow downloads?
This is probably due to your ISP throttling BitTorrent traffic.
You can see a list of ISP’s that are blocking downloads here
However, there is a way you can bypass the ISP’s checks by encrypting your torrents with RC4.
Below are a few of the popular Torrent Clients and how to encrypt them
1. Go to: Tools > Options > Mode
2. Check the “Advanced” radio button is checked in User Proficiency
3. Go to: Tools > Options > Connection > Transport Encryption
4. Check the ‘require encrypted transport’ box.
5. Choose RC4 in the ‘minimum encryption’ dropdown box
RC4 uses more CPU time
6. You can choose to tick the ‘Allow non-encrypted outgoing connections if encrypted connection attempt fails’ box. This will ensure compatibility with clients that are not using encryption. This does make it easier for your ISP to detect BitTorrent traffic.
7. Tick the ‘Allow non-encrypted incoming connections’ box
uTorrent
1. Go to: Options > Preferences > BitTorrent
2. Go to ‘Protocol encryption’, you can choose between ‘enabled’ and ‘forced’. ‘Enabled’ will give you more connections but offers less protection against traffic shapers.
Try ‘enabled’ first, if that doesn’t increase speeds, switch to ‘forced’.
3. Ticking ‘Allow legacy incoming connections’ allows non ecrypted clients to connect to you. This improves compatibility between clients but makes you more vulnerable to traffic shapers.
BitComet
1. Go to: Options > Preferences > Advanced > Connection
2. Go to: ‘Protocol encryption’ You can choose between ‘auto detect’ and ‘always’. Auto detect will give you more connections but offers less protection against traffic shapers.
Side note; use PeerGuardian as well, this is an IP Blocker that is regularly updated with IP addresses of investigators and stops them from seeing your activity. This tends to speed up downloads a little bit as well as giving you more security.
Simples. Enjoy your new fast download speeds.
