Microsoft on Tuesday had made public it’s plan to buy Nokia’s devices and services division which makes Nokia smartphones by paying about US $7 billion. $5 billion is for Nokia’s devices business and around $2.2 billion for the rights to Nokia’s patents.

Huawei was reportedly considering acquiring Nokia in it’s bid to help Huawei become a global leader in smartphone manufacturing according an article by the Financial Times.
The buyout news boosted Nokia shares in U.S. markets which went up 41 cents, or 11%, to reach $4.10, during US mid day trading on Tuesday.

Nokia is getting inspired from Apple by having exclusive press events and sending out invites that gives only a hint of what it might be about. Nokia has sent out an invite to the members of the press to an event here in London on May 14. The invite teases “See what’s next” followed by “The Nokia Lumia story continues.”

Nokia is making efforts to widen its Windows 8 user base, it has today announced two new Lumia smartphones at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
The entry level Nokia Lumia 520 will be priced at US $185 off contract, while the mid range Lumia 720 will cost US $338 .

Android and iOS once again dominated the smartphone market with 91.1 percent of all global smartphone shipments for the fourth quarter of 2012. Android and Apple shipped and landed 87.6 percent of the 722.4 million smartphones shipped worldwide in 2012 according to a report by IDC.

Apple and Samsung accountes for 52 percent of all global smartphone sales in fourth quarter of 2012 according to a report by Gartner. Overall, mobile phone sales declined across the globe by 1.7 percent last year, the last time when sales fell were in 2009.
