World’s largest phone maker Samsung announced on Monday that it would stop making desktop PCs because of abysmal demand and fast shrinking profits and instead focus on tablets and laptops. “Demand for conventional desktop PCs is going down,” a Samsung official told The Korea Times. “We will allocate our resources to popular connected and portable devices.”

More tablet will be shipped than Notebooks or portable PCs this year according to the quarterly Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker report by IDC, the already declining PC market will see negative growth for the second consecutive year denoting a broad shift in usage patterns.

Research consultancy Frank N. Magid Associates’s recently survey of 4,734 cell phone and smartphone owners revealed that 50% of people currently own an iPad, down significantly from 72% at last count. Apple’s iPad accounted for 68.3 percent of global tablet shipments last quarter according to Strategy Analytics. Global tablet shipments grew 67 percent annually in Q2 2012,that’s up nearly 10 percent from the fourth quarter of 2012, and up 7 percent year-on-year.
